But right now, it is one of the most generous, most accessible, and least competitive fully funded scholarships available to Nigerians who want to study in Germany. While everyone else is fighting over the same popular portals, this door is quietly open β and it closes on July 15.

What Is the KAS Scholarship?
The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is one of Germany's most respected political foundations, funded directly by the German Federal Foreign Office. Through its International Talent Development programme, it offers fully funded scholarships to international students and doctoral candidates who want to study or conduct research at a German university. Over 3,000 international alumni are already part of its global network β and that network could include you.
This is not a loan. It is not a partial bursary. It is a full scholarship that covers your living expenses, health insurance, family allowances if applicable, and even research travel grants. Germany is waiting for talented Nigerians who are ready to make a difference β and this scholarship is how you get there.
What Does the Scholarship Actually Cover?
For Bachelor's and Master's students: Up to β¬992 per month for a standard duration of two years. That is roughly β¦1.2 million every single month, paid directly to you to cover your living expenses in Germany.
For doctoral (PhD) candidates: Up to β¬1,400 per month for a standard duration of three years. That is over β¦1.7 million per month while you complete your PhD at a German university.
On top of the monthly allowance, the scholarship also includes a health insurance subsidy of up to β¬120 per month, a family allowance of β¬276 per month if your spouse lives in Germany for more than three months, a child allowance of β¬250 per child, research travel grants for stays abroad during your programme, and partial reimbursement of university tuition fees of up to β¬750 per semester in exceptional cases.
Beyond money, KAS scholars benefit from a strong international network, a rich interdisciplinary seminar programme, personal mentoring and academic guidance, and active university groups where you build friendships and connections that last a lifetime. PhD candidates can also join one of KAS's specialised research colleges focusing on Social Market Economy, Security and Development in the 21st Century, or Democracies in Europe.
Who Can Apply as a Nigerian?
Nigerians living in Nigeria apply through the KAS office in their region. However, if you are already living and studying in Germany, you apply through the domestic selection procedure with a deadline of July 15, 2026 at 12:00 noon CET. This blog focuses on that domestic route β the one with the upcoming deadline.
To be eligible, you must be an international student or doctoral candidate enrolled at or planning to enrol at a German university. For Bachelor's applicants, you must have successfully completed at least two semesters of your programme. For Master's applicants, you must intend to enrol in a four-semester Master's programme at a German university. For PhD applicants, you must be fully admitted to a doctoral programme at a German university.
There is no age limit. There are no restrictions on fields of study β with the exception of human medicine, dentistry leading to a state examination, and medical specialisation programmes. If your programme is in those areas, KAS unfortunately cannot fund you. Every other field is open.
One requirement that Nigerians must take seriously: you need at least B2 level German language proficiency, demonstrated by a recognised certificate such as the Goethe-Institut certificate. If your programme is taught in English but you do not yet have B2 German, you must reach that level before your studies begin. This is non-negotiable β KAS's seminars, mentoring, and community activities are conducted in German, so they require you to be able to participate fully.
What Kind of Person Is KAS Looking For?
KAS is not only looking for students with good grades. They are looking for the complete package β academically strong, socially engaged, and genuinely committed to democratic values and human rights. If you have volunteered in your community, been involved in church activities, student government, political organisations, social work, or cultural initiatives, that counts significantly here.

Step by Step β How to Apply
Confirm You Meet the Mandatory Requirements
Before you do anything else, confirm these three things: you have at least B2 German language proficiency with a recognised certificate, you are enrolled or planning to enrol in a qualifying programme at a German university, and for Bachelor's applicants you have completed at least two semesters. If you cannot confirm all three, do not submit β KAS explicitly asks applicants not to apply unless all mandatory requirements are met.

Prepare Your Application Documents
You will need your completed application form from the KAS Campus Portal, your academic transcripts certified and translated into German if they are not already in German or English, your degree certificates and diplomas, a personal statement explaining your academic goals, your social engagement, and why you identify with KAS values, at least two letters of recommendation which can be submitted in their original language with a German translation or directly in German or English, your German language certificate showing at least B2 level, proof of enrolment or admission to your German university programme, and a passport-sized photograph. PhD applicants will also need a dissertation proposal, which should preferably be submitted in German but may be submitted in English if your PhD will be written in English.
Submit Through the KAS Campus Portal
All applications for the domestic selection procedure must be submitted through the official KAS Campus Portal. Go here to create your account and begin your application: https://campus.kas.de. Upload all required documents directly on the portal. The deadline is July 15, 2026 at 12:00 noon Central European Time. Do not wait until July 15 β submit at least three days early to account for any technical issues with the portal.
Wait for the Selection Process
After submission, KAS will review your application. Shortlisted candidates are invited for a selection interview. If you are selected, you will receive confirmation of your scholarship and the details of your funding package. The process is competitive but fair β your social engagement and values matter just as much as your academic record here.

Do not contact KAS asking questions that are already answered on their website. They have explicitly stated on their official page that inquiries should only come after reviewing their full eligibility and application details. Read everything first, apply carefully, and only reach out if you have a specific question that the documentation does not answer. First impressions matter β and how you communicate with an organisation before you are even a scholar tells them something about who you are.
